The Power of Truth

-Thesis:"What ever is done in the darkness will eventually come out in the light"(unknown)
-Theme:truth
-Argumentative essay

Telling the truth is always better than telling a lie regardless of any good intentions for lying.  "If you tell the truth you don't have to remember anything".  Usually people who are hiding the truth or lying, make up stories to cover it up and more often than not the story changes each time it's recalled by the person.  In the novel The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Nighttime, Christopher's dad chose to make a bad decision and tell a lie to cover up what actually happened to his wife and Christopher's mother. Choosing to tell a lie will always lead to bad ends, and so if your good person you should never tell a lie. "Whatever is done in the darkness with always come out in the light".  This statement fits for what Chritophers dad did, as eventually his lie about what happened to his mother and his actions regarding the hiding of the letters came out in the light when Christopher was snooping through his room and found the box filled with letters his mom sent to him, but also how his dad decided to hide them.

I believe you should always tell the truth no matter how hard the truth may be, because I believe the truth will always set you free.  Christopher's dad lied to him by telling him his mother was in the hospital and died of a heart attack when she actually cheated with the neighbour and moved to London with him.  While his dad's intentions may have been good in hiding the truth, his lie was eventually uncovered with Christopher's discovery of all the letters his mom had sent him each week.  His dad made the conscious decision to hide all of them in a box in his closet, but that would lead to the truth finally coming out.  Christopher discovered the letters when he went in his dad's room to look for his book he was writing and found the letters all in a box in his dad's closet.  Christopher's dad was being very selfish in not telling him the truth just because it was hard for him and for him to explain everything to Christopher. Everyone deserves to know the truth especially if it's concerning your own mother.  It's very wrong that the dad hid these truths from Christopher, because a lie will always find it's way out into the light and if it does it can then cause much more hurt than the truth up front, and in this case it ruined the relationship between Christopher and his dad. Hiding something very bad like this situation in the novel can hurt the ones you love most. In the novel how Christopher's dad told him  his mom was dead is so reprehensible.  As the son he has the inherent right to know his mom is truly dead or alive. Christopher's dad also killed Wellington the dog.  This fact was apparent all the while as Christopher investigated who killed the dog, and the dad never told him until right after he discovered the letters.  Combined with all the other lies compounded, Christopher thought his dad was a murderer and how he lied about his mom that it was unsafe for him to be in that house with his dad anymore when his dad looked out for him for his whole life. It wasn't worth it wrecking their relationship they had over what really happened to Christopher's mom. You should always tell the truth because it's not worth the risk of losing what you care about most in this world.

The truth of what happened to Christopher's mom and Wellington was very hard to tell, especially because it would be very hard for Christopher to find out when he firmly believed something to the contrary.  It would be very hard for him to deal with. Some people do think that not telling Christopher was the right decision.  This is quite understandable because Christopher can't understand emotions very well, and generally speaking this would be very hard for him to find out that his dad was a killer and a lier.  It would impact negatively to their relationship and to also find out his mother is a cheater would probably hurt him as well.  This information would be awful to hear and perhaps the benefits of keeping these facts hidden from him outweigh the benefit of telling the truth?  After all, learning the real truth would likely wreck his opinion of his parents.  Sometimes "ignorance is bliss" and he certainly seemed to be content in just doing his math and playing with his rat.  However, some people think it would just be easier to keep a secret, or tell him way later in life which Christopher's dad was planning on doing inevitably.  In this case it would be very difficult to tell the truth as it could mess a lot of things up and he's only just a kid after all and this information would be very hard for him to take in. This information could wreck a lot in his life. "Something's are just better kept unsaid", but Cristopher definetly has the right to know the truth that his dad has been hiding.

I do understand that people think that Christopher's dad never should of told him or tell him way later in life, but this is extremely wrong and selfish of the dad.  Yes it is a good point but still it's very wrong and very selfish of Christopher's dad to lie to him and tell him that his mother died like that. Yes it would be way easier for Christopher's dad just to tell him that his mother died instead of what she actually did and not tell him that he killed the dog meanwhile  he is trying to figure out who the killer is. This would of eventually came out and it would be way worse finding out this information by yourself or from someone you don't care that much about.  Christopher's dad's bad decesion wrecked what the dad had with Chrtisopher and it changed his opinion how he saw his dad. Before Chrsitopher had a good realtonship with his dad and loved his dad very much, but now Christopher is scared of his own dad and see's him as a killer and liar are two awful things. Know their father and son relationship will never be the same just because his dad chose to lie now he will never get their relationship back that they used to have. It's always better to find out the truth from someone you care about at least that shows they're  honest and they care about you that much to tell you. Christopher deserves to know the truth, this definetly should not have been kept from him. Secrets like that will always find a way out it's just better to be honest about it.

In the novel there was a lot of bad things that happened that were kept a secret, I think this book teaches a very good and valuable lesson, always tell the truth to the ones you love or "What ever is done in the darkness will eventually come out in the light". This quote is exactly what happened to Christopher's dad. I will always believe to tell the truth, it's always better then telling a lie.  Christopher defenitley deserved the truth to be told to him. The truth is a very powerful thing, deciding to tell the truth will always be better then telling a lie because secrets always have a way finding their way out and if that happens it the damage is a lot worse then deciding to just tell the truth in the beginning.  I definetly believe in the statement "What ever is done in the darkness will eventually come out in the light". You should always be honest, "Honesty is the best policy".

  1. This is a very good first draft Becca. Couple things to consider. 1) You can make this essay much more formal just by eliminating all of the statements about "opinion." It's you essay, so by default, readers assume its your opinion, you don't need to say that. Just write your opinion as though it is a fact. :) 2) your essay has the feel that the biggest reason for telling the truth is that you will get caught, but your thesis and several sentences suggest you feel like there is a bigger reason? What is the REAL reason for telling the truth? Make that clear. What harm happens to your loved ones when you get caught?

  2. Thanks for going back and working to make your writing more formal.. it helped a lot. Your piece is still a little repetitive and you argument could use some help being more concise, but the overall attempt and your underlying position is solid. Whoop!
